Hello, OCS Family! Check out all the latest news and updates from the district below.

BOE DECISION ON WEAPONS DETECTION SYSTEMS

In the December 5 Board of Education meeting, OCS staff presented the results of a feasibility study conducted to look into the use of metal detectors or weapons detection systems in Onslow County high schools.

Surveys showed significant community support for the use of weapons detection systems in our schools, as part of a comprehensive safety plan. After summarizing the options available to the district, the Board voted unanimously to allow staff to move forward with planning for the implementation of Evolv weapons detection systems in our high schools for security screening during student intake.

HOLIDAY CRAFT FAIR

Craft Fair 2023

On Friday, December 8, members of the community gathered at White Oak High School to support our school-based enterprise students at the annual Holiday Craft Fair.

The sale featured products like holiday decorations, greeting cards, ornaments, jewelry, t-shirts and more, all hand-crafted by OCS students!

Our school-based enterprise programs allow students to get hands-on experience running a business from start to finish. Not only do students make the items they sell, but they also work on advertising their products, facilitating transactions, and handling money.

Through participating in sales events like this, students get the opportunity to practice real-world skills while earning money to grow their programs.

Check out a video from the event here: Holiday Craft Fair 2023.

JCE ADOPT-A-SCHOOL CEREMONY

JCE Adopt-A-School ceremony

On Thursday, December 7, Jacksonville Commons Elementary School held a ceremony to reaffirm its partnership with Marine Aircraft Group 29 and Marine Heavy Lift Helicopter Training Squadron 302.

The Adopt-a-School Program promotes mutually beneficial relationships between the military and schools by allowing military units to “adopt” a school. Units support schools through volunteering at school events, test monitoring, providing mentorship, and more. Schools can show their support for their unit during the holidays and during times of deployment.

Congratulations, JCE!

CHRISTMAS CHEER DONATIONS

Christmas Cheer 2023

On Friday, the OCS Central Office sent over 1,500 food items, around 150 toys, and more than $200 to Onslow Community Outreach’s Christmas Cheer program!

To help meet our community's needs, Onslow Christmas Cheer helps provide meals and gifts for the families that struggle to afford them.

We are grateful to have such generous employees who recognize the importance of giving back. Thank you to all who donated!
