News from the Board -- April 2, 2019

On Tuesday, April 2, 2019, the Onslow County Board of Education held its regular monthly meeting at Blue Creek Elementary School. The meeting’s agenda included the 2019-2020 tuition rate for out-of-county students, the Onslow Early College calendar for 2019-2020, personnel contracts and the Board attorney contract.

After a Good News Spotlight segment full of student and staff recognitions, including military awards, winter athletics and professional accomplishments, the Board heard from Chief Financial Officer Jeff Hollamon about the 2019-2020 tuition rate.

Mr. Hollamon presented to the Board, saying that policy allows for local boards of education to charge tuition to out-of-county students who wish to attend school in their district. He said that after calculations, he and his staff recommended setting the tuition rate at $2,115 for the 2019-2020 school year, which the Board unanimously approved.

Next, Chief of Communications Brent Anderson spoke before the Board, saying that previous issues surrounding the 2019-2020 Onslow Early College calendar and how it aligns with the Coastal Carolina Community College spring break have been resolved. He asked that the Board approve the newly presented calendar, which they did unanimously.

The Board then went into closed session to discuss the qualifications, competence, and performance of an employee or employees. When they returned, Superintendent Barry Collins asked the Board to consider contract extensions for his executive staff members, Chief of Operations Steve Myers, Chief Financial Officer Jeff Hollamon, Chief Technology Officer Jeff Pittman, and Deputy Superintendent Beth Folger. Other executive staff changes requested included the promotion of Executive Director of Human Resources CJ Korenek to Chief of Human Resources, a position recently left by Dr. Collins when he filled the superintendent position, and a promotion in title for Executive Director of Community Affairs Brent Anderson to Chief of Communications. All requested changes were approved unanimously. All executive staff contracts are now extended through June 30, 2022 to align with the superintendent contract.

Concluding the general business for the evening, Dr. Collins requested that the Board extent the contract of Board Attorney Alex Erwin until June 30, 2022 as well. They unanimously approved.

During the second public comment period at the end of the meeting, six citizens spoke to the Board on two different topics. Speakers addressed the upcoming educator rally in Raleigh on May 1, and the marching band program at Northside High School.
