OCS Website Renovation

In April, Onslow County Schools introduced its new web platform! Over the past several months, teams have been working to clean up our previous website, move data from the old site to the new template, review designs and provide training to district and school staff. All this was done to prepare our new online presence to give us a consistent look and feel, showing cohesiveness across the district.

The development of a single platform reduces costs and provides a single contract for technical support. As you have been working on the new site, I am confident you have noticed a much simpler interface which is friendlier to both our users and the general public.

As we continue to put the finishing touches on the main part of the move, please remember that this is all part of a process – not unlike moving to a new house. When you move into a new house, you are going to have a lot of boxes that need to be unpacked, and things to be put away. You will do all the initial unpacking, and then, inevitably, you will find that the drawer you thought the silverware needed to be in should be on the other side of the kitchen.

Our web migration process, is very similar. We must move the big boxes out of the “old house” because simply, when our contract ends with SchoolinSites, all the old information will be unavailable. So, these big boxes had to be moved first. As the boxes have been unpacked in the “new house,” we have been placing things where it was believed they would make the most sense. However, just like the silverware example above, we may find that things need to be moved to another “room” in the house – or another section or page of the website.

Much work has been done, and the school sites look amazing! If you have a chance, please take a few minutes to look at some of the engaging and interesting things that our schools have done. All of this is a testament to the innovation of our teachers and staff, and to the improved user experience this new platform is going to provide.

On behalf of our district-level team, I would like to thank each one of you for the work that has been done on our site, and look forward to continuing to “move the silverware around in the kitchen” as we get used to all that the website will allow us to do in telling the story of the Onslow County School System!
