Onslow County Close Up 2024
Onslow County Close Up was held Friday, March 15, and hosted more than 70 high school students from across the county.
The Close Up Program gives students from Onslow County Schools and Lejeune High School an inside look at how local and state governments operate and work together to benefit Onslow County residents.
The day started with a Q&A session with OCS Chief Academic Officer Dr. Chris Barnes and Camp Lejeune Community Schools Superintendent Ryan Smith. Students learned about why education is so important, what superintendents and district administrators do for their school systems, and some of the biggest challenges public schools are facing.
Students also participated in a mock commissioner's meeting in the Onslow County Commissioners' Chamber, toured behind the scenes of Albert J. Ellis Airport, and viewed demonstrations by law enforcement and emergency services.
At a special luncheon with local and state leaders, students heard from four state-level legislators about issues they find important. Legislators in attendance included Rep. George Cleveland, Rep. Phil Shepard, Rep. Carson Smith, and Sen. Michael Lazzara. Questions ranged in subject to include teacher pay, mental health services, and the most challenging issues facing our state today.
Thank you to everyone who made this dynamic learning experience possible for our students!
