Ms. Samantha Bernard
Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year!
I am Samantha Bernard, but you can call me Ms. B, and I grew up in Edinburg, Texas which is about 20 minutes from the Texas-Mexico border. This pretty much means that I love eating tacos! As a kid I was an avid reader, enjoyed playing music, and was an active member of the swim team. After high school I went to the local university, University of Texas Pan-American, and planned to be a music teacher. That quickly changed and I promised I would never be a teacher like my parents. Fast forward seven years, while I was working on my masters degree, I realized that I did in fact want to be a teacher. A fact that made my mother and father very proud! After I graduated from grad school in 2013, I moved out of my hometown to central Texas and began searching for a teaching position. For a year I worked as a substitute in all age groups, all subject areas, and all levels of need until I found the group of students I connected with the best. This journey led me to Exceptional Children, and I was employed by a small district the following year. That year I served as a Special Behavior Teacher with 5th and 6th graders. My first year of teaching was the most challenging and rewarding experiences I have ever had!
A year later after teaching in west Texas, I decided to return to college and work on a second masters degree in Maritime Studies. Most simply put, I love studying boats! This led me to North Carolina and East Carolina University, where I am still enrolled as I finish writing my thesis and aspire to be a maritime archaeologist. Go Pirates! After completing two years of classes I decided to return to teaching to help fund my education as well as continue to grow that teacher muscle! Last year I worked as a part time teacher in Greenville, but I wanted to be closer to my boyfriend, a Corpsman, who is stationed here in Jacksonville. During my search, I was lucky enough to be called one evening by Mrs. Hoffman offering me an EC position here at JCE. I was inspired by her spirit to provide the best for her students and staff and am proud to have been accepted as a member of the team!
As a member of the EC team I will be working alongside Leah Brady, who is also new this year, and Gisele Ashford. I will be providing academic support in math and language arts, as well as implementing any modifications necessary in the general classroom. As a resource for you and your child I will maintain regular updates on their success and look forward to serving you and your child this year!
