What is Battle of the Books?

  • Battle of the Books program is to encourage reading by all students at the middle school level. Our students are exposed to quality literature representing a variety of literary styles and viewpoints by prominent authors in the area of young adult literature. The game format creates interest and excitement in reading. Through the fun and excitement of the competition, students improve reading skills, mature in their choices of reading materials, and acquire a broader knowledge base. Team practices are conducted daily during enrichment, and the county level competition is held during the school day at Southwest Middle School. Interested students should see Mrs. Dickerson.

How can I participate?

  • Tryouts will be held in the fall of each school year. All students, grades sixth through eighth, may compete for a position on the team. Teams may have up to twelve members, but that is not a requirement. The number selected is at the discretion of the Battle of the Books coach. Team members will be chosen based on a written test, teacher recommendations, and approval by a team of teachers.
