Degrees and Certifications:

Mr. Joe Sarrero

I grew up in New York and relocated to Onslow County via the United States Marine Corps. I am married with three grown children. In 1995, I began working at Southwest Middle School teaching mathematics.

However, for the past four years I stepped out of the classroom and have been an Instructional Coach for Onslow County Schools. People always ask me if I miss the classroom because I have always had a passion to teach. Being an Instructional Coach has given me a bigger classroom as I have been afforded the opportunity to reach nearly every school in the County helping teachers in Elementary, Middle and High School. However, I do get my teaching “fix” by working as a math instructor at Coastal Carolina Community College twice a week.

I have a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary education from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and Master’s degree in Middle Grades Education from East Carolina University and I am certified through Barton College to teach the Academically and Intellectually Gifted.

I have been blessed to have been the recipient of the Onslow County Teacher of the Year Award, serve as the Project Based Math Coach, and now have the privilege of being the local trainer for the Southern Regional Education Boards’ Math Design Collaborative.

Aside from teaching, I also coached wrestling and am a member of the Quality Council. I am honored to be at Southwest Middle School for the 2017 – 2018 school year.
