Degrees and Certifications:

Melissa Whaley

I graduated from East Carolina University with a bachelor's in political science and a minor in business administration. GO PIRATES!  I received my teacher certification from North Carolina State University.  I attended UNCW graduate school to recieve my certification in gifted education this past fall.

Prior to coming to teaching with the NC Teach Program, I held numerous jobs in the finance industry.  I have worked as a branch manager at a major bank, was a mortgage loan officer, and worked at Stateside Elementary as their Financial Treasurer.  It was there that I discovered my love for working with children and decided to return to school and pursue a teaching license.  Though I loved my elementary school children, my passion was to work with middle school children.  I worked at Trexler Middle School as a 7th grade Social Studies teacher and loved every minute. In 2020, I joined the OVSS organization teaching 7th grade, and I am teaching 6th grade Social Studies for the second school year.

I was born and raised in Richlands, and attended both Trexler and Richlands High School.  After graduation from ECU, I moved to Wilmington, NC for 13 years.  In 2009, I decided to return home to be with family.  I am married to my husband David, and we have four beautiful children - Julie 21, a senior at UNCW, Noah 18, a freshman at Coastal, Kaitlyn 16, a Junior/Senior at RHS (will be graduating early, so not exactly sure what grade she is in),  and Camden 8, a third grader at RES.  I love all sports, but can usually be found at the soccer field.  While I will miss being face to face with my students at Trexler Middle School, I am thoroughly enjoying the history making journey we are taking at Onslow Virtual Secondary School!
