Betsy Castle, SWE Principal

  • SWE Families, we are in unusual times. As your school leaders, Karrie Helt and I want you to know that we are here to help. We may not have the answers yet, but we will walk through finding them with you. We want to assure you that our school is ready and excited to have your children back with us. Together with our teachers and staff, we have been building instructional models that provide time for children to reconnect with school, build relationships with their teachers and each other, experience success, and build mastery in their skills.

While a lot of our processes will look different, the heart of Southwest Elementary remains true. Thank you for choosing SWE.

    Betsy Castle, your proud principal

  • I am proud to introduce myself as your Southwest Elementary School Principal. My name is Elizabeth (Betsy) Castle. I am a strong believer in setting the bar high and empowering children to rise up and meet challenges. At Southwest Elementary, we seek to engage our children in learning that falls within each child's optimal learning zone. An optimal learning zone is a zone in which tasks and knowledge asked for are just hard enough to require a learner to struggle. We support our children in their acquisition of resilience, patience, and commitment to success. We also have a good time! Our children are given many opportunities throughout the school year to participate in field trips that bring classroom experiences to life! Our classrooms are lively learning environments modeled on flexibility and creativity to meet each child's needs.

We are committed to serving you and your student and are proud to have you as part of our family!

About Me

  • I am from Raleigh, NC. I attended Lenoir-Rhyne University for my undergraduate degree, Indiana University Bloomington for my Master's, and ECU for my Master's in Administration and Curriculum. Outside of school, I enjoy reading, riding horses, playing board games with my family, cooking, and visiting new places. My husband and I have two daughters, both in Onslow County Schools. We also have a bunch of fur babies! We have four dogs, three cats, and four horses. We are proud to call Onslow County our home!
