Degrees and Certifications:
Originally from Wilmington, North Carolina, I graduated from the University of North Carolina-Wilmington with a BA in English. After graduation, I attended North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro, North Carolina for graduate studies in English and Education. I began my teaching career in 1984 in the Greensboro area. I achieved National Board certification and left the classroom to work with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction in Raleigh, NC. Several years later, I began working at The Johns Hopkins University, School of Education in Baltimore, Maryland. When I began working at Johns Hopkins, I worked in the School of Education and supported school reform in low performing schools across the US and Guam. During my tenure at Johns Hopkins, I wrote curriculum for middle and high school students. This curriculum is currently used in schools across the United States. My final years at Johns Hopkins were dedicated to research in the neuroscience of learning. This research provides data on how the brain learns and how to target teaching to facilitate knowledge and retention. I moved to Jacksonville in 2016 and began teaching with Onslow County Schools. After over 35 years in the field of education, I believe that the opportunity to work with the students, parents, and staff of the Onslow Virtual School will be one of the most exciting endeavors of my educational career.
