Degrees and Certifications:

Rosemary Mitchell

Originally from Wilmington, North Carolina, I graduated from the University of North Carolina-Wilmington with a BA in English.  After graduation, I attended North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro, North Carolina for graduate studies in English and Education.  I began my teaching career in 1984 in the Greensboro area.  I achieved National Board certification and left the classroom to work with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction in Raleigh, NC.  Several years later, I began working at The Johns Hopkins University, School of Education in Baltimore, Maryland.  When I began working at Johns Hopkins, I worked in the School of Education and supported school reform in low performing schools across the US and Guam. During my tenure at Johns Hopkins, I wrote curriculum for middle and high school students. This curriculum is currently used in schools across the United States. My final years at Johns Hopkins were dedicated to research in the neuroscience of learning. This research provides data on how the brain learns and how to target teaching to facilitate knowledge and retention. I moved to Jacksonville in 2016 and began teaching with Onslow County Schools. After almost 40 years in the field of education, I believe that the opportunity to work with the students, parents, and staff of the Onslow Virtual School is one of the most exciting endeavors of my educational career.

  • Students should check Outlook emails and Teams posts daily.

Students should charge computers each night and be ready for class with cameras and microphones in working condition.  Please remember that the student's entire face must be visible during live sessions.

My classroom expectations and syllabus may be found in Teams in the "General" channel under "Files" in the folder "Classroom Materials."

My office hours are from 2:50-3:20 Monday-Friday.  I will be happy to help students and parents during that time.  However, if I am needed outside of my office hours, I will try my best to accommodate both students and parents. If a student needs my support, it is most expedient that they arrange a time for us to meet at the end of a live session after others leave the meeting. I have set up a private channel to help with student-specific questions and tutoring.

When emailing me, please include the student's name, the period I teach them, and English course (III or IV) in the subject line or the first line of your message. Please also include the reason for the email.  If you are working on a device that does not have the option for a subject line, please include the student's name, the period I teach them, and English course (III or IV) prior to the beginning of your message.

Example:  Scott Fitzgerald-2nd period-English III-Good afternoon, could we set up a time for tutoring this week at 4:15?
