• Academic Derby changes format in 2019-2020 school year!

We are excited to announce our upcoming Academic Derby Challenges for 2019-2020.

This year our Elementary Academic Derby Challenge will be a 4-day event with different teams playing each other in a single day of exciting matches.  Winners of the individual days will then meet in championship rounds. The course of play will resemble a Battle of the Books style arena with 10 questions per round. The tournament will take place on December 3rd, 4th, 5th, & 6th.

The Middle School Academic Derby Challenge will be a one-day event in March of 2020.  Teams will face each other for rounds of 10 questions and the course of play will resemble a Battle of the Books style arena with all teams present to view the gameplay.

The Rotary Clubs of Onslow County will again proudly sponsor the Dr. Kay B. Gresham Rotary Academic Challenge for our Onslow County High Schools.  This tournament has been a tradition and honors the memory of long-time Onslow County educator and administrator, Dr. Kay B. Gresham. This tournament will be held on Saturday, February 22, 2020.

Academic Derby began in 1984 and only involved High School students.  Middle school and elementary school derby matches would eventually come on-line and create a tradition of exciting televised Academic Derby matches featuring Onslow County School System students. In 2018, Hurricane Florence shuttered our school system for a great deal of time and therefore the traditional Academic Derby seasons were canceled in favor of preserving needed instructional time for our students. This was a good opportunity to make some changes for our program and to create what will hopefully be an even better experience for our players and viewers.
