Mrs. Joanne Van Eycke

Hello, Parkwood Families! I am very excited about teaching music here at Parkwood. Music is an integral part of my life and I am honored to make music with your children. Singing and playing guitar are my favorite ways to make music, but I also play piano, clarinet, recorder and some bass guitar. This year, the fourth and fifth grade classes will have the opportunity to learn how to play guitar. I am looking forward to starting the modern band program here at Parkwood and will use my extensive Music Will training to do so. The third grade will be going on a musical adventure around the world and learning about music from many different countries. Second grade will be learning about major orchestral works such as Peter and the Wolf and the instrument families. First grade will begin learning music notation and percussion instruments. Kindergarten will have a focus on music and movement using repertoire from Sprouting Melodies, Music Together and Music for Kiddos. Also, new this year is the bucket drumming program as well as using music for social emotional learning.

Keeping the music fresh and engaging has always been important to me. I started my career as a board certified Music Therapist in 2003. I received my bachelor's degree from Montclair State University and my master's degree from New York University. As a music therapist, I worked in hospitals, private schools and public schools.  To work in the public schools, I obtained my NJ teacher's license through alternate route training at Saint Peter's University, and worked for 7 years in Jersey City, NJ.  I am looking forward to starting this next chapter working in the Onslow County School system.

When I am not making music, I am an avid gardener and can be found in my greenhouse planting flowers and vegetables with my husband, son and dog.
