    What is MPA?

From the North Carolina Band Masters Association:

The purpose of the North Carolina Bandmasters Association Music Performance Adjudication (MPA) is to:

    1) Provide students and teachers a means of receiving competent comments from competent judges,

    2) To stimulate and recognize growth.

    3) To provide students and teachers with a means of hearing the work done by other school ensembles.

    Rating System

Students are rated based on both their stage performance and a sightreading component. These ratings consider both accuracy, as well as musicality, interpretation, presentation, and professionalism. The ratings are as follows with summarized explanations:

    I. SuperiorEnsemble performs above what is written on the page with musical integrity

II. Excellent Ensemble performs the musical intent of the composer at a high level

III. AverageEnsemble performs well with some minor deficiencies in either musical intent or fundamentals.

IV. Below AverageEnsemble performs with several deficiencies in music performance or fundamentals.

    V. Poor – Ensemble performs with many deficiencies in music performance or fundamentals.

On March 12th, the HCMS MPA Band students performed a Pre-MPA concert for parents and a panel of area band directors. The panel gave feedback to help in final preparation for the Assessment on March 21st. Students spent time both in class and after school working to improve their skills and musicality.

March 21st, 2024, the HCMS MPA Band traveled to Havelock HS for their MPA Assessment. Students represented HCMS very well in their presentation of their hard work. These students are on their way to making excellent musicians and learning to contribute to a team effort in working together to achieve their greatness!

Join us on May 23rd to watch their continued growth as we present our 6-8 Bands in their annual Spring Concert at White Oak HS ETPAC!

    Holiday Celebration

    December 14th, 2023 6:30 pm

    White Oak ETPAC

Our HOLIDAY CONCERT is fast approaching. Please join us on December 14th at 6:30 pm in the White Oak ETPAC as our 6-8 band students perform their recent successes for your enjoyment!

Student Attire: Festive Holiday colors and attire. Girls should make sure dresses come below the knee. Head gear should not block the view of other band members (santa hats and antlers or elf ears are OK). Be careful how warm the clothes are because the stage lights make it very hot up there.

6th grade arrives at 5:45, going directly to the stage with their instruments assembled and music for the concert. Cases may be stored in the art hallway if needed.

7th & 8th grades will stay after school for a pizza dinner, change clothes  and transportation to White Oak. Once at White Oak, we will set up and rehearse together for our concert. When 6th graders start arriving, 7 & 8 will go to the art hallway to wait to enter the auditorium at 6:30.

We will only have the transition from 6th grade to the combined 7 & 8 grade band. Students are expected to remain and watch their peers' performance.

Looking forward to an amazing Holiday celebration!
