Superintendent Dr. Barry Collins is excited to introduce the OCS Raising the Bar initiative. Raising the Bar is a districtwide effort that will call on each member of the Onslow County Schools community to ask themselves, "What can I do this year to raise the bar for OCS?"
Like many districts in the region, state, and nation, OCS has experienced disruptions to instructional time, hiring processes, and more over the last few years. Our goals for the 2023-2024 school year and beyond include empowering students, exceeding expectations, and achieving exceptional outcomes. These goals can not only be measured by test scores and data, but by the community and morale we all foster in the coming year.
From our staff, including principals, teachers, bus drivers, custodians, district leadership, and everyone in between, we are asking for a commitment to growth, accountability, and teamwork.
From our families, we are asking for involvement, understanding, and collaboration.
From our students, we are asking for dedication, a desire to grow, and a willingness to learn.
From our community, we are asking for your continued support and partnership.
Together, we can raise the bar for OCS and empower everyone in our school community to exceed their own expectations.

How We Are Raising the Bar
-
-
Standardized Bell Schedule
- In addition to improving the transportation experience, our new standardized bell schedule will provide equitable instructional time at all schools, allowing teachers and administrators to maximize time with their students.
-
Updated Cell Phone Policy
- In an effort to eliminate distractions and improve focus in our classrooms, the Board of Education has updated the district's cell phone policy, Policy 4318: Use of Wireless Communication Devices. Effective with the start of the 2023-2024 school year, students are allowed to have cell phones on campus, so long as the devices are not activated, used, displayed, or visible during the instructional day.

-
Improved Security Protocol
- This school year, the district is introducing a standard response protocol for all of our schools in the event of an emergency on campus. These protocols will standardize the processes and language used across the district to address emergency situations, improving communication within the schools and with our families.
-
Expanded Student Opportunities
- This year, we will continue to expand opportunities for students by introducing new and improved CTE programs, providing families with "Parent Academy" opportunities to learn about postsecondary options, investing in math and literacy instruction across the district, and more.
