• Good Afternoon Parents, students, and staff,
This is Joycelyn Cassidy, Principal of SWMS, with the Colt Call for the week of Dec 02 to Dec 06.

We hope everyone had a safe and relaxing Thanksgiving Break and we look forward to seeing our students on return to school on Monday Dec 02.  Any information shared in this message will also be posted on the school website.
Congratulations and Shout out to Aidan Boyd and Bradley Haynes who tied for the winning position of our School Geo Bee held just before Thanksgiving.  They will represent SWM at the District Geo Bee in January.

SW Community, SWM is preparing for the Holiday Season by working to support families of our community with two beneficial events.  Beginning 12/02 to 12/20, we will sponsor a can food drive in order to help with our CHEW program and families.  We are looking for 4 specific items:  canned soup; any box of pasta; applesauce; and canned fruit.  However, any donation will be appreciated.  Donations brought in can be used toward HOUSE points.  In addition, the HR with the most overall donations will receive an incentive from me specifically for them.

The other Holiday Support will be in the form of our Angel Tree.  As a school we are working to support our families and would like to invite you to assist.  Just choose an ornament from the tree and information on how to assist will be provided for you.  Gifts can come in the form of retail gift card from stores like Target, Wal-Mart, any mall store or a Visa Gift Card, as well as the specifically identified gift noted on the ornament.

In Science we are working on activities for our family STEM night scheduled for 12/12.  This will be a wonderful family event for you to see some of the quick and easy experiments that reflect how we are impacted by science.  We are asking for donations of general household items to assist our students with their projects and experiments.  A list of items will go home with students on Monday 12/02.  In addition, we will showcase our finalist for the school level Science Fair.  Please come out and have a great Science filled Family Night.

6TH GRADE STUDENTS ARE INVOLVED IN A STUDY ISLAND ELA BLUE RIBBON WAR that began last Tuesday.  Students are strongly encouraged to start earning ribbons over the Thanksgiving break.  Your student can earn ribbons by logging into their Study Island account through Clever.   They can access practices by going to NC Programs and selecting 6th grade ELA.   They can choose any of the objectives listed and will earn a ribbon when they score 80% or higher.  Please encourage them to challenge themselves to earn as many ribbons as possible.  The battle between classes will be ongoing for the remainder of the year.

Flyers about ordering the 2019-2020 yearbook were sent home.  The online store for purchasing yearbooks has been set up.  Parents can go online to Balfour.com and purchase the yearbook.  Personalization, icons, and a cover are available for purchase as well for an additional fee.  The yearbook is $28.00 until January 1st when they will increase to $30.00.

    Mark Your Calendar:

    •    The next wrestling and soccer matches are scheduled for Tuesday, 12/03 at JCMS.  The last match of the season is Monday, Dec 9 against HCMS at home.  Start time for the games is 4:00 and admission is $4.00.
    •    Our Winter Chorus Concert is scheduled for Monday, Dec 9 at SWH at 6:30 PM.  Monetary donations to support our arts program will be accepted at the door.
    •    There will be another concussion meeting scheduled for Tuesday, Dec 10 at 5:30.  Any student and their parent interested in trying out for basketball who has not attended a meeting previously will need to attend this required meeting in order to be eligible to try-out for basketball.  Basketball tryouts begin Dec 16.

This ends our Colt Call for this week.  Please remember, all information in this message will also be available on the school website.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend, goodbye!
