• SWMS Summer Adventure

    Dear Parent,

As you are aware NC House Bill 82, encourages extended academic support for students to bridge learning gaps that may have developed due to school closings and hybrid learning environment.  Students that meet district-specified criteria will be invited to participate. Based on preliminary testing information (benchmark assessments) and current academic progress (Report Card grades) shows that your child is eligible to participate in the Onslow County Summer School program your child would benefit from our Summer Learning Program, titled “Adventures”.  The “Adventures” program will model a traditional summer school format.  We are excited to offer an invitation to your child to attend our “Adventures” program.  This program will provide your child with the opportunity to build on their reading, math, science, and social/emotional skills to help prepare them for the 2021-2022 school year.  Students will also have time for encores, such as Technology/Engineering Design, Health/PE and art.

“Adventures” is a 5-week, full day, program that begins June 15-July 2 and July 12-July 22; 7:30-3:00.  A short Holiday break is scheduled for July 5 to July 9.  Transportation, free breakfast and free lunch will be provided for those attending “Adventures”.  If a student wishes to bring a snack, parents may provide a healthy snack. Please note that students will still be required to wear a mask.

While we are extending this invitation early for those students that will benefit from the additional support.  However, any student that shows proficiency (level 3 or higher) on their End of Grade tests, and/or demonstrates improvement in their current academic standing to passing grades can opt out of the invitation.

Completion of the attached registration will confirm acceptance into the “Adventures” program.  Please be aware that students will be required to complete the whole program beginning on June 15.

Please return the enclosed registration form to Southwest Middle School or your child’s teacher by May 10, 2021.
