Announcements 2021-2022

  • May Updates

This year, my students have learned quite a lot in Science.  Over the next month, we will be reviewing concepts from the year while learning more about how to do research.  For Science, students will be engaged in various mini-research assignments where they will have the opportunity to build those research skills.  We will also practice using the Scientific Method to address questions that arise from their mini-research assignments.

The last day that we will have LIVE with students will be at the very beginning of June because they will be turning in their laptops when they go to complete the End-Of-Grade assessments (which are at the beginning of June).  Therefore, please make sure that your child is keeping up with lessons each and every day.  Students will have assignments due on the same day they are assigned and some due at the end of the week. It will depend on the type of assignment.  Remember, we will be engaging in research which sometimes takes more than one day.  I will be reminding them to keep up with their work but could definitely use support on your end to make sure they are staying on track.

I appreciate the amazing opportunity to teach and learn from your child this year.  I believe this year has been a great success for all OVSS students. There have been many learning opportunities and a lot of ground covered.  The media keeps saying that students will never recover from the time/instruction lost during the pandemic.  I strongly disagree! Young people are resilient and can, have, and will continue to gain progress in every content area - reading, writing, mathematics, thinking, sciences, and civic studies.  I am going to continue to encourage positivity among our young people and the educators who are tasked to help them progress.  They can do it! We can all do it!  Thank you again! If you ever have questions, concerns, OR SUGGESTIONS, please feel free to email me! YOU are your child's primary educator and I am always open to your suggestions.  Together, we can ensure that your child develops and matures academically, intellectually, socially, emotionally, and physically.

  • April Updates

This month in Science, students will be focused on Plant Life Cycles, Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration.  We will also be studying the many facets of Ecosystems.  Next month, students should expect intensive reviews of everything they have learned in 6th Grade Science.

SPRING BREAK will be the week of April 11-15 and April 18th will be a Teacher Workday so no school for students.

As of April 1st, all students were instructed to be caught up with all Science assignments. There should be no missing work as of the morning of April 4th.

    Happy Spring!!!

  • Soil and Conservation

    4-March 2022

We have begun our until on Soil Characteristics and Conservation.  There are not any PowerPoint presentations to post on our Lesson Resources page because the students and I are working in DISCOVERY EDUCATION.  They have access to the lessons in that app.

We are also practicing good notetaking and using ONENOTE to take and gather notes.  I will continue to monitor for good notetaking throughout the rest of the year.

    Happy March!

  • Earth's Structure and Composition Unit

We are beginning a new unit this week (Feb. 7-11) on Earth's Structure and Composition which should take us a few weeks to learn.

Students and parents should review grades on a regular basis. I have been trying to provide feedback and enter grades almost as soon as students complete an assignment. Many times, students are given real-time feedback and able to correct any misconceptions. Please encourage your child to take advantage of those opportunities in a timely manner.

We are in the process of planning a super fun Spring Dance for our middle schoolers. It will be on March 18th at Sturgeon City in Jacksonville from 5:30-8:30. Please ask your child about this event and see the OVSS website for more details.

Many thanks for all of your wonderful affirmations of encouragement and support.  I appreciate my OVSS families! Have a fabulous February!

  • SECOND SEMESTER BEGINS!

We started the second semester today, Thursday, January 20th but school's will be closed tomorrow - Friday, Jan. 21st due to an incoming Winter Storm.  When we return next week, students will begin learning about our Solar System and why the Earth can sustain life while other planets cannot.

  • Welcome back from Winter Break!

Thank you all who were patient with me as I had a few technical issues that have, hopefully, been worked out.  We are continuing in our unit on the solar system and more specifically how celestial objects like the moon and sun affect the Earth.  Students will be learning about:

    • Moon phases
    • Why we only see one side of the moon
    • Eclipses
    • Tides
    • Why it is that Earth is the only planet known that can sustain life

    Important Dates:

    • January 12 - Last day to turn in 3rd Grading Period assignments
    • January 14 - Last day of 3rd Grading Period
    • January 17 - HOLIDAY - No school for students or staff
    • January 18-19 Teacher Workdays - students do not have school
    • January 20 - Test on Moon, Eclipses, and Tides

PLEASE make sure to check grades on a regular basis; at least once a week.  Students should be completing assignments ON THE DAY they are assigned.

Remember that even if we have an Independent Workday, students will have an assignment to complete asynchronously.

Make this first month of 2022 an amazing one for you and your family!  Thank you for your support and encouragement!

    I love winter(Praying for snow :)

  • Welcome Back from Thanksgiving Break!

We will be finishing up our unit on Thermal Energy this week by learning about energy transfer and conservation.  Next week begins our unit on Earth, Sun, and Moon Relationships.  We will stay with that unit for the two weeks before the Winter Break and continue it upon returning from break.

As a reminder: students are expected to complete assignments ON THE DAY that they are assigned.  Please encourage your child to check the WAG each and every day then make sure they complete whatever assignment is posted.  Approximately 20% of my students are not completing assignments as they are assigned and 1/2 of those are not completing assignments at all. Students always have all of the resources they need, including our recorded LIVE lessons, to help them complete graded assignments, quizzes, and tests.

Thank you for your support. Virtual learning is not successful without 100% support from the family.  My goal is to always provide engaging lessons and support to your child so that they grow in knowledge and in their love of learning.

Make it a positively wonderful week!

2nd Grading Period Begins - October 4th

  • October 3, 2021

Please accept my gratitude for being so kind and compassionate toward me during this time.  On Saturday morning, my father passed and I was blessed by being with him during his passing.  On that note, we are planning for his memorial to happen this week. I am planning on being LIVE for most of the week.  However, if the lesson plan needs to change, please be patient and flexible with me.  I ask that students simply follow the instructions for each assignment and/or announcement that I post in TEAMS.  Again, thank you for your compassion. I look forward to being with my students and experiencing the joy that I feel so often when I am with them (yes....even virtually).  Please feel free to reach out to me any time via email. Have a wonderful week!

The Weekly Lesson Resources should be utilized AFTER the LIVE lesson to help reiterate content, take notes, or review.  They do not take the place of attending LIVE lessons as we do interactive activities and discussions while in class.
