OVS: A Change in Purpose

  • In the summer of 2020, the Onslow County Schools opened the Onslow K-12 Virtual School to meet growing demand for a remote only educational option for our students and parents during the COVID-19 pandemic.  In response, nearly 4,700 students and families have entrusted OVS with providing their children instructional services.  While the district is pleased with the option the Onslow Virtual School provided our families, it became apparent after 5 months of operation the need to improve the quality, efficiency, and effectiveness of the school in an effort to serve of all its students and remain a sustainable option.

Early in the rebuilding process, OVS shifted its thinking and planning to a new school year; post-COVID.  The rebuilt version will be a choice school for our families who are looking for a full-time virtual option offering a high-quality education through personalized learning opportunities, experiences, and supports, driven by innovation, and designed to meet the student’s social and emotional needs.  The Onslow County Schools plan to open two virtual schools during the 2021-22 school year-one school being a 600-student K-5 virtual elementary school and the other being a 1000-student 6-12 virtual secondary school.
