• Hello!  We are so excited to start this school year!  In 5th grade we combine ELA and SS.  We do this by reading historical fiction texts and non-fiction texts (paired readers).  We will have 4 novel studies this year that will pair with a social studies topic.  Students are encouraged to purchase a copy of the book for themselves.  Here is the following novel and social studies schedule:

Quarter 1: Blood on the River by Elisa Carbone/ Early Colonization

Quarter 2: Fever 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson/ American Revolution

Quarter 3: Picture of Freedom by Patricia McKissack/ Slavery

Quarter 4:  Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse/ Great Depression

Assignments:  Students will be expected to complete all assignments to their best ability following given due dates.

Novel Notebook- Students will complete weekly Novel Notebook assignments, which can be found in TEAMS assignments and due every Wednesday.

Paired Readers- Students will receive a paper copy on their in-person days.  Students will turn this assignment in after their quizzes. (Cohort A will turn them in the following Monday, and Cohort B will turn theirs in on the following Thursday.)  These paired readers count towards their social studies grades.

Journals- Students will be required to take notes, complete journal entries, and visualization in their journals/notebooks.  These journals will be check periodically for a grade.

Quizzes-  Students will take 2 quizzes each week on most Wednesdays.  One will be for the fiction reading (novel study) and the other will be for non-fiction reading (paired readers).  Students are REQUIRED to use their notebooks and paired readers on the quizzes.

Projects- Students will have projects periodically through-out the year.
