    Math

Using iReady curriculum, we will strengthen previously learned skills and build on that knowledge in creative large and small group settings. We are reviewing shapes, bar and picture graph data, measurement, counting money, and telling time.

    Skills

Using CKLA curriculum, we will strengthen previously learned skills and build on that knowledge using the science of reading methods to help students grow in their reading and writing abilities. We began the year with a review of common spellings for sounds. We have reviewed syllables, consonant blends, doubling consonants, doubling consonants after soft vowels when adding -ing or -ed, and spelling two syllable words with short vowels. We have reviewed alternate spellings for sounds (i.e. /j/ can be spelled 'j', 'g', 'ge, while /s/ can be spelled 's', 'ss', 'c'). We are continuing work on tricky spellings for vowel sounds: /a/, /ae/, /o/, /oe/, /e/, /ee/, /i/, /ie/, /u/, /ue/, and /er/

In writing, we are focusing on building better sentences, topic sentences and paragraphs, and taking notes for writing reports.

Our class is continuing to work on sentence structure, identifying nouns and verbs, comparing proper and common nouns, making plural nouns, and working with the conjugations for the verb "to be". We are reviewing how a verb can be an action and a state of being "to be". Our class has begun to identify subjects and predicates in sentences.

    Reading and Content Knowledge

Within each reading unit, there is a content knowledge topic. These topics include vocabulary, science, and social studies content.

Our current unit is learning about Immigration and Citizenship.

    Science

Science and social studies are embedded in the content knowledge of the reading units in CKLA. Students will further explore science and social studies content during centers.
