• Sunday Call 1/9/22

Posted by Elizabeth Castle on 1/9/2022

Happy Sunday! This week our 4th and 5th graders will be taking their mid-year benchmarks. These assessments are very critical to see how students are progressing. We use this information to make sure we know where each child needs support. Please make sure your child is in class by the tardy bell. If your child arrives after testing has begun, they will be asked to wait in the media center until testing has ended and will be making up their benchmark test at another time.
In the past, it has taken staff over three weeks to complete all the make up testing needed due to late arrivals and absences.

Please remember that breakfast closes at 8:15 for everyone except bus riders. If you are dropping your child off at or after 8:15, they must be fed by you. Please, do not send your child to school hungry.

Saturday our running club is having their 5K at the school!

Next week, there will be no school for students on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday, January 17, 18, or 19.

Hope everyone has enjoyed this great weekend! Thank you to everyone who is helping with our Booster Fun Run Fundraiser by helping to get pledges from every one of our great 50 states! So far we have pledges from 27 of the 50 states.
40% of our kids have registered for the Fun Run. If we can get to 50% by Monday morning, Mrs. Helt and Mrs. Oliver will be entertaining carpool with Karaoke!

Our FunRun is on Thursday, the 4th. All the kids will be running. We hope you can join us for the fun. A schedule of the times each grade will be running will be posted on DOJO this week.

Don't forget that tomorrow is a jammie day for everyone who registered for the FunRun and wore costumes on Friday.
I want to give a big thank you to everyone who came out to make the PTO Monster Mash a SCREAMING success. It was a real blast!

Happy Sunday evening Southwest Elementary families.

Just a few quick reminders and updates for the week.

We have Check in testing this week for our older kids. 4th and 5th graders will be taking an ELA Check in on Tuesday. Our 5th graders will also be taking a Science Check in on Thursday. There are interim assessments provided by the State of NC to show growth for our students. We will not be taking Math Check Ins due to having data available from iReady assessments.

We will be participating in our annual fundraiser and Booster Fun Run in the next few weeks. We will kick off the event on October 27th with fun events each day for our students and the culminating Fun Run will be on November 4th. More information will come home over the next few weeks and will be shared on Dojo. This is our main fundraiser for the year. We appreciate your support and sharing the information and donation opportunity with your family and friends around the world.

And parents we need some help in the mornings. Please make sure your child has a mask prior to coming to school. We have some spares on campus but our stock is running low and we are finding that we are giving masks to the same children often. We appreciate your support with this.

We wish each of your a fantastic remainder of your evening and look forward to seeing our Ponies bright and early on Tuesday morning. Tomorrow is a work day for staff only.

Happy Sunday evening Southwest Elementary families...

This is Mrs. Helt with just a few reminders for the week.

Starting tomorrow, all students, staff and visitors to all Onslow County Schools are required to wear a face mask.

Please make sure our students are bringing a charged laptop to school with them daily.  Charging needs to happen at home if the students are able to bring them back and forth.

Popcorn sales start this week.  Students may bring in money for a yummy bag of popcorn Monday – Thursday.  The treat will be delivered on Friday.   A huge thanks to our PTO for making this happen.  If you are interested in helping pop popcorn on Fridays, reach out to us and we will pass your name along to our PTO Committee.

Mrs. Castle and I would like to once again thank all parents for keeping the lines of communication open as we move through this school year.   We will gladly take emails, call at schools or calls and texts to our cell phones.

Have a great reminder of your Sunday and we will see our Ponies bright and early in the morning.

The beginning of Grade test is this Wednesday for all 3rd-grade students. Please tell your baby there is no need to stress. This test is on the content they haven't learned and it will help us know what to teach them.  Thanks for the great communications! Don't hesitate to text or call if your baby is sick or you need help with anything.

    Happy Sunday!

This is Mrs. Castle, your proud SWE principal. Each Sunday you will be getting a call from either me or Mrs. Helt, our magical Assistant Principal, with information for the week ahead.
If you ever miss the call, we post a copy of the script on our website. Under the tab marked Families, you'll find a section called, Sunday Calls. We post the calls by date.
This week, make sure you accept your teachers' Class Dojo Invitation. This is how we manage quick communications and keep you informed about late buses, field trips, etc.
Wednesday from 5-7, we will welcome our Kindergarten and pre-K families for their orientation.
Thursday we will welcome our 1st-5th grade families between 3-7. Due to the extended hours, we will close the doors at 6:45 to allow teachers to wrap up with the parents in their room and head for home at 7. We hope the extended hours help you find the time to join us!
Our book fair will be open from 9 am-7 pm Wednesday and Thursday. This is a buy one get one free event.
Go ahead and apply for free or reduced meal costs. No matter your income, you may be approved. Getting approved now protects you from unwanted charges.
    You can apply at lunchapplication.com
Finally, be on the lookout for video demos of how carpool will run. It always helps to get an idea of what to expect.

We are excited to launch into this great new year with you! See you very soon!

Monday May 17th - all 2nd grade computers and chargers are due.

Tuesday May 18th - all 1st grade computers and chargers are due. It is also Disney Day. Enjoy the opportunity to dress up in your favorite Disney gear.

Thursday May 20th - We will be administering the 3rd grade ELA EOG as well as the 5th grade Science EOG. Please ensure your Ponies are well rested, breakfast in bellies when they arrive or plan to eat quickly once they get to school, on time and with a charged computer and laptop for testing. 5th grade testing is on the computer. 3rd grade is a paper pencil test however need their computers for another activity. Testing will happen starting at 8:30am until noon each day.

And another reminder that masks are still required on buses and while on campus. Some of our students are loading the buses without masks and we need to ensure we are complying with the mandates set forth by the CDC and Onslow County Schools.

Keep an eye out on Dojo for end of year reminders as well. It's hard to believe we only have one more Sunday update call to make for the 2020-2021 school year. Looking forward to a great week.

    Happy Sunday SWE families!
This week all library books are due. If your child has lost a library book, make sure they find it. No one wants those lost book charges!

We are so excited to host our band concert at 5 pm Monday and our chorus concert at 5 pm Tuesday. Both concerts will be in front of the flag poles. Bring your camp chairs and enjoy!

Wednesday is a teacher workday. There is no school for children.

Please make sure we have your correct address. Many important things are sent by mail. If we don't have your updated address, you could be missing out on opportunities for your child. It's easy to update your address. Send in a copy of your electric or water bill from the new address with your name on it. If you've moved and don't have a bill, call Mrs. Knowles, our data manager, and she can help you get things sorted out.

As we head down the final three weeks of school, help your child make a strong finish. Turn off electronics, plan for at least 10 hours of sleep (that's what kids need), and keep your brain hydrated with plenty of water.
