How will enrollment into the Onslow Virtual School affect the graduating class of 2021?
Seniors who will graduate in May 2021 will be served through OVA during the 2020-2021 school-year. This will allow seniors to maintain membership at their traditional school and graduate with their peers.
-
If I enroll in Onslow Virtual School this year, will my student be able to return to their traditional school next year?
Students who attend the Onslow Virtual School during the 2020-2021 school year will be allowed to return to their traditional school the following 2021-2022 school year. Students that are currently attending a magnet program will be allowed to return without the need to re-apply.
-
Will virtual students be able to participate in school athletics or other extracurricular activities?
For the 2020-21 school year, Onslow Virtual School students grades 9-12 will be eligible to participate in extracurricular actives at their attendance boundary school. Students must declare their intention to the attendance boundary school’s athletic director before the beginning of the season. OVS athletes must meet and maintain the same criteria as that of their peers in a traditional school setting.
For information regarding what extracurricular activities are offered at your attendance boundary school, please visit their website or contact the school’s office.
Students in grades 6-8 will not be permitted to participate in athletics at their home districted school.
-
How will Onslow Virtual School be structured?
Onslow Virtual School will operate with a blended approach in synchronous instruction and asynchronous learning. We believe that using two methods will provide your child a multi-faceted approach to learning. During synchronous instruction your child will learn at the same time as their peers and have opportunities to engage in discussions with their class. Examples of synchronous instruction include: video conferencing, live chats, and live stream videos.
The second component of OVS framework is asynchronous learning. When engaged in asynchronous learning your child will be moving through the course content on their own. This allows more flexibility for your child to explore the lesson, complete assignments, and develop questions for their teacher. Examples of asynchronous learning include: Flipgrid, videos, lessons in the LMS, etc.
-
How will OVS track attendance in a virtual setting?
Attendance record keeping is provided to OVS by tracking student logins to the Learning Management System and by students attending the synchronous sessions with their teacher(s). OVS must report days present and absent annually. There are 190 days of attendance required.
Due to the nature of virtual instruction, OVS students are not confined to attend school or access their course work at a specific time of the day outside of their live synchronous lessons. Therefore, the parent/guardian should monitor their student’s daily online accumulated hours, their daily schedules, assignments, quizzes and tests to assure their student does not fall behind during the semester. OVS recognizes that tracking virtual attendance is a partnership and requires consistent communication.
-
If I try virtual school and it does not meet my student's needs, what are my options?
OVS is asking for a one (1) year commitment. Parents should make the decision to enroll in virtual school in a very thoughtful manner. Virtual education is a tremendous option for most students, but some find the demands too strenuous. While students may always return to their districted school, it is important that parents work with the school district in the timing of the return to ensure a good transition for the student.
-
What are the responsibilities of parents?
OVS is a full-time virtual school, which means it is home-based. This gives parents additional responsibilities for providing instructional support, monitoring student engagement and progress, and communicating with teachers as the Learning Coach. Students in grades K-5 must have a learning coach (parent) that can commit at least 3-6 hours per day to their child’s education. For more information please see Family Commitment section of the OVS Parent and Student Handbook.
-
Will my child's IEP transfer to a virtual setting?
Yes, Onslow Virtual School is responsible for providing a free and appropriate education under the federal Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act (IDEA). OVS Special Education teachers assist parents in accessing and coordinating services pursuant to a current Individualized Education Plan (IEP). Parents should indicate that their child has an IEP on their registration form.
-
Will AIG services be provided through OVS?
Yes, OVS teachers will work closely with an AIG specialist to ensure your child receives their services.
-
Will EL services be provided through OVS?

-
Will high school students be able to enroll in Honors and AP courses?
OVS students will be able to enroll in Standard, Honor, and AP level courses.
-
Will OVS students be able to take electives such as band, orchestra, or choir?
Unfortunately, full-time virtual instruction for the performing arts is not currently feasible. Students who want to continue instruction in the performing arts should consider the Onslow Virtual Academy which allows the student to maintain membership at their traditional school.
-
Who will be teaching my child at Onslow Virtual School?
