Email

Since school and classroom information is typically relayed to parents via email, it is important to keep your e-mail address updated with me AND the office. Within the first week of school, I will attempt to contact the email addresses you provide. Please respond to let me know you have received it. If you do not receive an email within the first week of school, let me know.

AVID

  Students will participate in AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) Elementary, a program dedicated to helping students achieve their goals of going to college.

Each AVID student has a binder in which he or she is required to keep materials from all academic areas. Students keep track of assignments on an agenda and are require take daily notes. The binder and the agenda will be checked for content and organization. Students are taught study skills, test preparation, time management, and the writing process.

Students record homework assignments , reminders and upcoming events in their planners. It is students’ responsibility to ask parents to review and sign their planner daily.

Late Work

Late work will be accepted. I understand that circumstances sometimes prevent students from getting assignments turned in on time. I do, however, want to discourage students from procrastinating when it comes to completing and turning in overdue assignments. Late work will only be accepted up to one week after the due date. After that time, the assignment will be entered as a 0. Of course, accommodations will be made for special circumstances.

These are the expectations all students will need to meet in order to keep our classroom a safe and friendly learning environment!

1. Show respect – towards your teachers, adult leaders, peers, and our building.
2. Follow directions quickly, quietly, and to the best of your ability.

Remind App

Download the Remind App or text the class number in order to sign up to receive reminder text messages from me! These messages will be used to remind you and your child of upcoming due dates, field trips, and other important class information. Text @mrslowrye to the number 81010 to receive these messages!

Desk and Binder Organization

I believe a clean, organized desk supports learning, so we will have a specific desk and binder order in our classroom which students (and teachers) are expected to maintain. Students are required to keep a copy of a binder organization checklist in their binder. At the end of each day, students’ desks are inspected before being dismissed.

Classroom Jobs

Your child will be asked to complete a job application within the first week of school. Their job assignment lasts for one month, so I encourage students to only apply for jobs they will really enjoy!

Nameless Papers

If a paper is turned in without a name, it will still be graded, but it will be filed in a “Nameless” file that is accessible to students. If your child did not receive a grade for an assignment they completed and turned in, encourage them to check the “Nameless” file for their missing assignment.

Numbers

Every student in our class is assigned a number. This number is used all year to identify the students for classroom management purposes such as assignments and alphabetical order. Students are asked to place this number next to their on every assignment.

Absent Work

If your child is absent for an extended period of time, make up work will be collected and documented for your child while they are gone. There is no need to collect work before leaving as your child can complete the work once your return (exceptions made for special circumstances). Students are allotted the number of days they were absent to complete all missing work. For example, if a student misses two days of school, they have two days to turn in all make-up work. Absent work will be marked missing if it is not received in the allotted time. Some collaborative or hands-on assignments cannot be made up. For this reason, please help your child make it priority to be at school every day. All missed tests will be made up during recess when your child returns.

Student Mailboxes

All student work is returned to students in their classroom “mailboxes.” Please expect a weeks worth of corrected work to come home every Monday , as that is the day students empty the contents of their mailboxes. I strongly suggest that you designate a box at home where all corrected papers can be stored until the quarter end. That way, if an assignment goes missing , it can easily be found here. Once all grades have been finalized at the end of each quarter, you can discard the papers.

Non-Essential Items

Students keep their backpacks in the classroom , but it is in the students best interest to leave non-essential items( video games, toys, Slime, IPODs, etc.) at home. If students bring items that continually cause a distraction and do not remain in the backpack , these items may be kept in the “June Box”(items kept until June) until a parent note is written.

Cellphones must be turned off during instructional time and kept at the bottom of the students’ backpack. If a students’ cell phone rings during class, it will be confiscated until the end of the day. At the second offense, the parent will have to pick up the phone from the front office.

Water Bottles

Students are encouraged to bring water bottles to the classroom , as long as they are not a distraction. Hydration supports learning! Water bottles need to be taken  home each day for sanitation purposes.

Library

Our class visits the library every week. Students are allowed to check out two books at a time and they are due back in two weeks. Fines apply for lost or damaged books.
