National Honor Society is built upon the principles of four pillars: Character, Scholarship, Leadership, and Service

CHARACTER
NHS students uphold principles of morality and ethics, is cooperative, demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability, shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others.SCHOLARSHIP
NHS students have and will maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.75 or higher.
LEADERSHIP
NHS students are leaders who are resourceful, good problem solvers, promoters of school activities, idea-contributors, dependable, and persons who exemplify positive attitudes about life.SERVICE
NHS students voluntarily contributes to his or her school and community, done without compensation and with a positive, courteous, and enthusiastic spirit.

**Only Juniors and Seniors can become members of NHS at SBHS **
Students cannot become a member of NHS until junior or senior year but it is never to early to start preparing for the opportunity to join such a prestigious organization. The information below indicates qualities that should be maintained by NHS members and candidates.
Scholarship:
A cumulative weighted GPA of 3.75 obtained during freshman and sophomore years is used to determine eligibility for membership. GPA alone does not guarantee selection into NHS. Then the student will be evaluated based on service, leadership, and character.
Leadership:
A student exercises leadership when he/she:
-Demonstrates initiative in promoting school activities
-Contributes ideas that improve the civic life of the school
-Inspires positive behaviors in others
-Demonstrates academic initiative
-Successfully holds school offices or positions of responsibility
-Is a leader in the classroom, at work, or in other school or community activities and dependable in with any responsibility given
-Is resourceful in proposing new problems, applying principles, and making suggestions
Character:
A person of character demonstrates the following six qualities:
-Trustworthiness
-Respect
-Responsibility
-Fairness
-Caring
-Citizenship
Service:
The student who serves:
-Volunteers and provides dependable and well-organized assistance, and is willing to make sacrifices to aid
-Works well with others and is willing to take on difficult or inconspicuous responsibilities
-Enthusiastically renders any requested service to the school
-Is willing to represent the class or school in interclass and interscholastic competition
-Does committee and staff work without complaint
-Participates in some activity outside of school, for example:
*Girl Scout, Boy Scouts; Religious groups; Volunteer services for the elderly, poor, or disadvantage
-Mentors in the community or students at other schools
-Students must have 20 documented service hours that are obtained in freshman and sophomore years.
