Dear Elementary School Parent or Guardian,

Thank you for your patience, understanding and support during these unprecedented times surrounding COVID-19. We know you may have questions and concerns about your child’s ongoing education during this time of learning from home. It is our goal to provide you with accurate, up to date information to help alleviate concerns and address your questions. Last week, we received guidance from the North Carolina State Board of Education and the Department of Public Instruction on grading as students are learning from home. Based on this guidance, Onslow County Schools will maintain the following grading practices for kindergarten through grade 5 during the time students are learning from home:

    • Teachers will provide students with meaningful feedback to promote student growth.
    • Teachers will monitor the progress of students in order to provide academic support.
    • Procedures for final report card grades are contingent on students’ return to school and additional guidance from the NC State Board of Education and Department of Public Instruction.

Based on research, feedback, and best practices, School and district staff continue to reflect on our learning from home guidelines and expectations. As a result, we have made the following adjustments to the learning from home guidelines for PreK-5 students:

PreK        90 minutes per day (average)

K-2           2 hours per day (average)

3-5           3 hours per day (average)

We would like to thank you for your ongoing assistance and support in continuing your child’s education during these uncertain times. Please contact your child’s school if you have any specific questions. Thank you again for your continued support of your student and our school community.

    Sincerely,

    Mark Bulris, EdD.

    Executive Director of Elementary Education

    Onslow County Schools
