Mr. Harris' Biography

Welcome to Fourth Grade!

I hope everyone enjoyed their summer.  My name is David Harris.  I will be teaching fourth grade Social Studies and Language Arts this year and teaming with Mrs. Conard who will be teaching Math and Science. I started teaching in Onslow County in August of 2008.  

I moved to North Carolina in 08 from New York where I received my BS Degree in Elementary Education  from the State University College of Oneonta.  I was born and raised in New York but have come to love North Carolina.  I worked with the staff, faculty and parents at Dixon for 14 years before transferring to Coastal Elementary in 2021.  Opening up a new school was a great experience and I am glad I made the transition.  I decided to transfer to Coastal as it is closer to home and provided an exciting opportunity.  I enjoy surfing, traveling, reading, coaching soccer for OCSA and spending quality time with my kids.  I am married and have a son who is in his last year here at Coastal and a daughter in her first year at Dixon High School. 

Teaching and gearing students to be leaders in this global economy is what I strive for. Coming from Dixon I played the lead role in the "Leader in Me" Lighthouse Team, which received Lighthouse status in my last year there.  This was a major accomplishment that I was proud to be a part of.  Coastal is a "Leader in Me" school as well.  I am a key member of this team again as one of the coordinators and look forward to helping lead us to another Lighthouse status.  The “Leader in Me” is uniform throughout our school and you will see the seven habits posted in every room, the hallways and outside too.  We encourage our students to take leadership of their learning and academics, which may develop the whole child and create great habits along the way.
